Week 7 Wine Tasting #1: Peter Mertes Platinum Riesling Spatlese

Name: Peter Mertes Platinum Riesling Spatlese

Variety: 100% Riesling

Region: Rheinhessen

Country: Germany

Year: 2021

Price: $9.00

Winery Review: "Hints of rye and caraway lend a spicy, savory tone to this herbaceous semi-sweet Riesling. Juicy and ripe with a pleasant stone-fruit flavor, it finishes brisk and crisp." With hints of earthy, tree fruit, and citrus notes. Pairs well with pork, shellfish, spicy food, poultry, and cured meat.

Wine Folly: From page 158 of Wine Folly, it states that Rieslings can be produced from bone-dry to very sweet. The off-dry Rieslings make a perfect pair with spicy Indian and Asian cuisines. Wine Folly shows that Rieslings can have flavors of lime, green apple, beeswax, jasmine, and petroleum. Rieslings from Germany are noted for their sky-high acidity, high aromatic intensity, minerality, and balanced off-dry style.

Personal Review: This was a greenish-yellowish white and smelled like a pear or an apple, just like the winery review had stated. On my first sip, it felt like a punch. It was very powerful and actually very sweet. It kind of reminded me of the over sweetness and powerful punch of the Sherry I had tasted previously in this course. Upon more sips, I could really taste the apple and pears that I was smelling before. I had some cucumbers before tasting this wine, but I don’t think it really affected my pallet much.
